Biography

Swedish tenor Joachim Bäckström’s extraordinary voice was discovered by one of his fellow students at the Institute of Technology in Lund, Sweden, where he studied engineering.

The classmate was head of the highly rewarded Swedish Male Choir Svanholm Singers, and he encouraged Joachim to audition for the choir in Malmö Opera, which marked the beginning of his career as singer.

Following studies with Karin Mang-Habashi in Malmö he has studied with Professor Kirsten Buhl Møller at the Royal Opera Academy and he has also worked with guest professors like Michael Eliasen, Fiona McSherry, Daphne Evangelatos, Craig

Ruthenberg, Barbara Bonney, Philip Langridge, Stig Fogh Andersen and worked with conductors like Christian Badea, Tobias Ringborg, Martin Isepp and Giancarlo Andretta.

Joachim made his debut at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen as Raul de St Briosch in Lehar’s THE MERRY WIDOW in 2007 and in addition he sang the role as Gastone in Verdis LA TRAVIATA, Don José and Remendado in Bizet’s CARMEN. In December 2010 he will make his debut as Pinkerton MADAMA BUTTERFLY at Malmö Opera Sweden.

Future engagements include guest appearances at the Royal Opera, Copenhagen and Don José CARMEN with Opera Østfold, Norway.

He will also appear as soloist in Malmö Symphony Orchestra’s New Year Concerts.

Joachim Bäckström has received numerous rewards and scholarships from a.o. Rotary Trelleborg, Oscar Crawfords Stipendium, Odd Fellow, Christina Nilsson and Idella Foundation.
